Maggie is such a stunning spot - I just went for the day and had the best time! My friend and I hired a motorbike (otherwise you can rent a scooter) and explored the island on wheels - really reminded me of Indo vibes haha. If you can stay for longer, you can camp or stay at a hostel!
It's just a short ferry ride from Townsville, and offers stunning beaches, scenic hikes, and plenty of wildlife—without costing a fortune.
Here’s what I did and how you can make the most of your day on the island:
Getting There:
Start your day early by catching a ferry from Townsville to Magnetic Island. The ferry is affordable and takes about 20 minutes, offering beautiful views of the coast.
Morning: Hike to the Forts
Once on the island, head to the Forts Walk, one of the best hikes on the island. This 1.5-hour return walk takes you through dry tropical forest with great views of the coastline. Along the way, you'll pass historic WWII military sites and might even spot some koalas in the trees! The hike is free, and the views from the top are stunning, making it a must-do.
Late Morning: Explore Beaches
After your hike, cool off at Arthur Bay or Florence Bay—both are beautiful, relatively quiet beaches perfect for a swim or some relaxation. These beaches are accessible by walking or catching a local bus, which is budget-friendly and convenient.
Lunch: Picnic or Local Café
Pack a simple picnic (you can grab supplies from the local shops or the ferry terminal) and enjoy it by the beach, or head to a local café for a reasonably priced bite. Base Backpackers Café is a good spot for budget-friendly meals with a view.
Afternoon: More Beaches or a Shorter Hike
If you’re keen for more exploration, take a walk or a bus ride to Nelly Bay, which is another lovely spot to relax. Alternatively, if you still have energy, try the Balding Bay or Radical Bay walks for more quiet beaches.
Getting Back:
Catch a late afternoon ferry back to Townsville after a relaxing day of hiking, swimming, and soaking in the island’s beauty.
With free hikes, stunning beaches, and affordable transportation, Magnetic Island is an ideal spot for a budget-friendly day trip full of nature and adventure!
