One of the most iconic hikes in the Albanian Alps, the Valbona Pass connects the two stunning national parks of Theth and Valbona. I did the hike starting in Theth and finishing in Valbona, and highly recommend that direction, though both are totally doable depending on your itinerary. The trail takes you through high mountain passes, alpine meadows, and dense forests, with breathtaking views along the way.

What is the Valbona Pass Hike?

The Valbona Pass hike is a point-to-point, full-day trek that crosses from one valley to another through a mountain pass at 1,795 meters above sea level. The trail is about 17 km long and takes 6 to 8 hours depending on pace and breaks. Expect moderate difficulty with some steep sections, but overall very manageable with decent fitness.

The route is well-marked with red and white trail signs and doesn’t require technical hiking skills, but be aware that weather conditions can change quickly, so plan accordingly. While most people may not need a guide, hiring a local guide can be a great option: both for safety and for learning more about the history, geology, and culture of the region. (However, if there is still snow in the mountains, you should 100% hire a guide for safety reasons!)

Which Direction Should I Hike?

You can start in either Theth or Valbona, but I personally recommend starting in Theth:

  • The views as you descend into the Valbona Valley are absolutely stunning.

  • Theth has more things to see and do (like the Blue Eye, Grunas Waterfall, and the Reconciliation Tower), so starting there lets you explore more before the hike.

  • That said, hiking from Valbona to Theth is slightly easier in terms of elevation gain (about 630m vs. 850m).

No matter which direction you choose, the experience is memorable, so it mostly depends on your timing and itinerary.

When to Go:

The best time for the hike is June through September, depending on weather conditions. Snow can linger on the pass well into May and even sometimes into June, so it’s important to check with your guesthouse about the weather conditions prior to doing the hike.

If you’re looking to avoid crowds, June or September are ideal. July and August are the most popular (and hottest) months, so start early in the day to beat the sun and the foot traffic.

Where to Stay:

You’ll need to stay overnight in both Theth and Valbona: this is a point-to-point hike with no road in between. There are plenty of guesthouses in both villages offering comfortable beds and warm meals. Most will help you arrange transport to/from trailheads if needed.

Getting Back to Shkoder after the Hike

Transportation can be a bit tricky to arrange for this hike, and you have a few options. If you are driving a car, I’d recommend leaving it in Shkoder, and arranging either public transportation or a taxi from to Theth. This can often be arranged with your guesthouse, or there is a minibus that departs from Shkoder to Theth twice daily during summer months. This can be arranged with Komani Lake Ferry, which includes prices and timetables. This company can also arrange your return from Valbona to Shkoder via ferry and minibus (Valbona to Fierze by minibus; Fierze to Koman by ferry; Koman to Shkoder by minibus).

If you're not traveling with your own car, here’s the typical route back to Shkoder after finishing the hike in Valbona:

  1. Minibus from Valbona to Fierze (pick-up usually around 10:30 AM).

  2. Ferry from Fierze to Koman (1:00 PM daily – a scenic 2-hour ride across Komani Lake).

  3. Minibus from Koman to Shkoder.

To make this easier, you can book all transport legs at once through the Komani Lake Ferry website. Just make sure to align your dates and guesthouse addresses correctly.

Packing List

Here’s what I recommend bringing for the hike:

Comfortable hiking boots, lightweight layers, waterproof jacket depending on the weather, water and snacks, sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen, and cash.

Guesthouses usually provide dinner and breakfast, and there are a couple of cafes on the trail, but it’s best to bring your own snacks just in case.

Final Thoughts

The Valbona Pass hike is a must if you’re exploring northern Albania. Whether you do it in two packed days or stretch it into three for a more relaxed pace, it’s a unique way to experience the untouched beauty of the Albanian Alps. And though it takes a bit of coordination, it’s totally doable and absolutely worth it.
