This is the big tourist village at the base of the Eiger - way more developed than anywhere else in the valley. It's basically Swiss mountain tourism central with hotels everywhere, tour buses, and crowds of people from all over the world. That said, it's popular for a reason - the Eiger is right there in your face and there's tons to do. Just expect it to feel more like a resort town than a quiet village.

How to get there
🚞 Train from Interlaken Ost - takes 35 minutes, runs every 15-20 minutes
🚗 Drive and park in the village (expensive parking)
The new Grindelwald Terminal opened in 2020 with the Eiger Express cable car

What to do

  • First cable car - cliff walk, zip lines, mountain carts (super touristy but fun)

  • Glacier Gorge - walkways through a dramatic canyon

  • Eiger Express to Jungfraujoch (fastest way up now)

  • Pfingstegg cable car for easier hikes

  • Base for tons of hiking trails

  • Winter skiing - big ski area

Tips

  • Gets absolutely packed in summer - tour groups everywhere

  • Everything is expensive even by Swiss standards

  • Book cable cars in advance or you'll wait forever

  • If you want peace, stay somewhere else and day trip here

  • The village itself is nothing special - just hotels and shops

  • Early morning or late afternoon is slightly less crowded
