Take a stroll through Piazza Aldrovandi, another picturesque piazza with a little farmer’s market and numerous artisanal shops and cafes - might be a good idea to stop for another break and try something local! As you reach the end of the piazza, pay attention to another hidden gem of Bologna: Torresotto San Vitale, the ancient city gate dating back to 1159. Did you know that in different times Bologna used to have three different circles of defensive walls? As the city was growing, the walls were expanding, creating additional “circles” (before almost all of them were demolished by the raging people in a rebellion against the oppression, which is very, very Bolognese-like - remember how locals value their freedom?). After passing beneath the ancient city gate, proceed on to Via San Vitale and take the first turn on the left - a very atmospheric narrow street Via Guido Reni (named after a famous Bolognese artist - we will recall him later on!) will take you back on Strada Maggiore as we’re not done with it, just yet.
