For those who want to experience the city's contemporary dining scene
Moroccan cuisine is known for its rich flavors and aromatic spices (and rightly so). But Marrakech is a cosmopolitan city that has attracted people from all over the world, particularly in recent years, which means that it's developed an exciting international dining scene. The following restaurants serve great food in a gorgeous ambiance, and serve as a reminder that there's more to Marrakech's dining scene than tajines and couscous.
Plus 61. Named after Australia's telephone country code +61, this chic cafe serves delicious shared plates using only the freshest local ingredients. The menu changes based on seasonal availability, but crowd favorites include the chicken schnitzel, the steak sandwich, and the pea potato dumplings. From the desert menu, the ricotta panna cotta with espresso caramel drizzle is a must. A note for coffee lovers: Plus61 is also one of the only places in Marrakech that you can get a flat white.
Les Jardins Du Lotus. Run by Mexican-Canadian chef Clarisse Jolicœur, this pretty pastel restaurant has a diverse and delicious menu offering everything from lobster beignets to burrata-herb spaghetti. "Clarisse's famous shrimp tacos" are an absolute must. During the day, Les Jardins Du Lotus is laidback and perfect for a leisurely lunch. By night, there's a DJ and a more festive crowd that's keen on sampling as many cocktails as tacos.
Cantine Mouton Noir. The best burger in Marrakech is actually a shrimp burger, and you can find it at Cantine Mouton Noir. The menu here features delicious, elevated takes on comfort food. Chef and Casablanca native Aniss Meski studied in France and lived in Montreal for a decade before returning to Morocco with his wife to open this cozy bistro and the city's food scene is better for it.
Dardar Rooftop. Located just a five-minute walk from Marraech's bustling main square Jemaa el-Fnaa, Dardar is a stylish restaurant and bar that boasts a lively atmosphere and some of the best views the medina has to offer. The menu features a variety of Moroccan, European, and Asian dishes. (The shrimp pil pil is a must for garlic and chilli lovers.) Cocktails, beer, and wine are also served. Dardar fills up quickly, so you absolutely must book ahead of time if you want to secure a reservation, particularly at sunset.
Le Bistro Arabe. One of the best establishments to spend an evening, Le Bistro Arabe is a gorgeous jazz bar and restaurant that offers music from a house band, a refreshing Mediterranean take on Moroccan dishes, and great service. Le Bistro Arabe fills up quickly, so you absolutely must make a reservation. The music starts every night at 8 p.m.
