Roys Peak in Wānaka is one of the South Island’s most famous hikes — and for good reason. The view from the summit is absolutely breathtaking, easily one of the best in New Zealand 🇳🇿. From the top, you’ll see the glacial valleys around Lake Wānaka, the jagged Southern Alps, the always impressive Mt Aspiring/Tititea, and even across to Lake Hāwea.

🥾 Track details

  • Distance: 16 km return

  • Time: 5–6 hours return

  • Elevation gain: 1,228 m

  • Difficulty: Intermediate — it’s a steady climb the whole way, so you’ll need a decent level of fitness. In winter, the top section can be snowy and icy, so crampons + alpine experience are a must.

🅿️ Getting there
The track starts from the Roys Peak carpark, about 6 km from Wānaka along Mount Aspiring Road. The carpark is big, but in summer it fills up fast — arrive early, take a shuttle, or consider biking/walking. The track is signposted from the carpark.

📸 Photography tips
Sunrise and sunset are both incredible, but sunrise usually means fewer people at the summit. Bring a wide-angle lens for sweeping shots, a zoom for details, and don’t forget the famous “selfie point” for that classic Roys Peak snap.
