Rauma is a charming town on Finland’s west coast, about 2 hours west of Turku by car. It’s known for its historic wooden architecture and UNESCO-listed Old Town, making it a must-visit.

HOW TO GET THERE: If you're driving from Turku, take the E18 and Route 8 which is around 2 hours. There are also daily trains from Turku, with a travel time of approximately 2–2.5 hours. If you’re driving, parking is free of charge, but most parking spots have time limits. You can’t park inside the Old Town area.

Old Rauma is best explored on foot, with cobblestone streets and narrow lanes, so wear comfortable shoes. Many cafés, boutiques, and galleries are small and seasonal, so check opening hours, especially in winter.

BEST TIME TO VISIT: Summer or early autumn is the best time to visit, when the streets are lively and the weather is pleasant. During summer, Rauma also hosts Lace Week, one of the city’s biggest annual events, celebrating its long lace-making tradition with exhibitions, workshops, and a festive atmosphere throughout the Old Town. That said, winter is gorgeous too, especially during the holiday season, when the Old Town transforms into one of the most magical Christmas markets in Finland. In short, Rauma is truly a year-round destination.

THINGS TO DO:

  • Old Rauma. Wander the UNESCO-listed streets, admire the wooden houses, and take in the historic charm. Don’t miss the town squares and hidden courtyards for photo opportunities.

  • Local cafés & restaurants. Grab a coffee or Finnish pastries at a café in Old Rauma.

  • Visit the Rauma Art Museum, which hosts temporary exhibitions, events, and workshops throughout the year.

  • Take a fun photo with the Rauma Flikka statue, a local symbol of the city.

  • Check out the narrowest street in Finland, located between Kuninkaankatu and Kauppakatu. The street is called Kitukränn.

  • Explore the ruins of the Church of the Holy Trinity, a fascinating relic from the Middle Ages.

  • Local shops & boutiques. Browse for handicrafts, textiles, and souvenirs unique to Rauma.
