The Aletsch Glacier is the biggest glacier in the Alps, located in Switzerland. It stretches for about 23 kilometers and covers an area of around 81.7 square kilometers. This massive glacier is made up of four smaller glaciers that come together at Konkordiaplatz. Over the years, the Aletsch Glacier has been retreating, losing both length and thickness. In fact, since 1980, it has lost 1.3 kilometers in length and more than 300 meters in thickness. Despite its retreat, the Aletsch Glacier remains a popular tourist destination, with stunning views and hiking opportunities in the surrounding area.

HIKE DETAILS:

Start at Betten cable car station. The the cable car up to Bettmeralp. You have to take another cable car to Betterhorn cable car.

The hike starts from here with an incredible view over Aletsch glacier. The hike will be mainly downhill, over 1000m , and 305 meters of elevation gain.

The hike is 15,3 km long and can be completed in 4 -5 hours.

On this hike you will be extremely close to the glacier, you will almost feel you can touch it.

You will be heading into the direction of Märjelenseen and passing by the Gletscherstube mountain hut. Here you can take a breather before you start your long descent back to Bettmeralp. The hike is rocky therefore you will need sure footedness. The weather can be very unpredictable so make sure you have clothing for every scenario.

I went in summer in. wind breaker and I needed a hat and gloves. Big mistake :)
