Gunnuhver is one of Iceland’s most powerful and atmospheric geothermal areas, located at the southwestern tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula. This otherworldly landscape features boiling mud pools, hissing steam vents, and vibrant mineral deposits. The area is named after a legendary ghost, Gunna, who, according to folklore, was trapped in the hot spring by a priest over 400 years ago. The site is part of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark.

🚗 Road

Gunnuhver is easily accessible via Route 425 (Suðurstrandarvegur). I prefer the east side parking lot which is often less busy and you can go there straight after visiting Valahnúkur which is right next to it.

❄️ Winter

The area remains accessible during winter months. However the area can become very slippery due to mud and wet boardwalks.

🥾 Hike

A short, well-maintained boardwalk leads from the parking area to various viewing platforms around the geothermal features. The walk is easy and suitable for all ages.

🚻 Facilities

There are no facilities directly at Gunnuhver. The nearest restrooms and amenities can be found at the nearby Reykjanesviti lighthouse area.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • The geothermal features are extremely hot and can be dangerous; always stay on marked paths and viewing platforms.
