Axamer Lizum: The Olympic White Roof

Located just a short journey from Innsbruck, Axamer Lizum is often called the "White Roof" of the Alps. With a prestigious Olympic pedigree, this high-alpine destination offers a dramatic landscape dominated by the jagged limestone spires of the Kalkkögel mountains, often referred to as the "Dolomites of North Tyrol."

Why I included this in your guide:

I’ve included Axamer Lizum because of its raw, high-altitude beauty. Whether you are visiting in winter to carve down Olympic runs or in summer to hike among rocky giants, the visual impact of the Kalkkögel peaks reflected in the alpine waters is something you won't find anywhere else.

Javi’s Insider Tips:

The Perfect Route: For the best experience, take the Hoadlbahn gondola all the way to the top station (2,340m). Start there by taking in the 360-degree views and having lunch at the Hoadl-Haus, a panoramic restaurant with massive glass walls. After that, begin your descent on foot towards the Speichersee Axamer Lizum (the lake). From the lake, you can continue down to the mid-station to catch the gondola again for the final leg back to the parking lot.

The Photo Spot: The Speichersee is the star of the show. This artificial lake is strategically located to capture the reflection of the dramatic Kalkkögel peaks. It is the ultimate spot for a sunset photo or a quiet moment with your own snacks.

Olympic Legacy: You can actually ski or hike on the same slopes that hosted the Winter Olympics twice. The terrain is vast, offering everything from groomed runs to world-class freeride areas.

Access & Logistics:

How to get there: From Innsbruck, it takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

Public Transport: Take Bus Line 4162 directly to the base station.

By Car: There is a large parking lot right at the base of the Hoadlbahn.

Innsbruck Card: The round-trip journey on the Hoadlbahn gondola is 100% included for free with the Innsbruck Card.

Price: Without the card, a summer round-trip ticket for the gondola is approximately €28.00.
