Berglsteiner See: The Best Kept Secret

If you want to escape the tourist crowds and find a place that feels like your own private discovery, this is it. Tucked away in a dense forest above the valley, Berglsteiner See is a tiny, emerald-green lake that remains virtually unknown to most travelers. It is the definition of a hidden gem.

Javi’s Insider Tips:

The "Invisible" Spot: You won’t see this lake on the main tourist posters, and you will likely be the only tourist there. While other spots are packed, here you’ll mostly find quiet nature. It is small—you can walk the entire perimeter in just 20 minutes—but the sense of peace is massive.

Combine Your Visit: This lake is located right next to the town of Rattenberg (which you’ll find already detailed in my guide). It is the perfect natural extension to your visit; after exploring the medieval streets of the town, head here to finish your day in total tranquility.

The Magic of Autumn: If you visit in autumn, this place is a must. The surrounding forest turns brilliant shades of orange and fire-red.

The Iconic Reflection: The highlight for your photos is the charming wooden house/restaurant sitting right on the water's edge. On a calm day, the house and the colorful trees reflect perfectly in the still water like a mirror.

Logistics & Access:

How to get there: The lake is "hidden" for a reason—you have to walk a bit to find it.

The Trail: Park at the "Reintalersee Ost" (East) car park. From there, follow the gentle forest path uphill. It’s a very easy, family-friendly hike that takes about 30 minutes.

Public Transport: It’s a bit of an adventure. Take the S-Bahn (S1) to Brixlegg, then Bus 621 to "Kramsach Parkplatz Halbinsel." From that stop, walk to the Reintalersee Ost parking lot to start the 30-minute forest hike.

Innsbruck Card: Your train and bus rides are 100% included for free, so getting to the start of the trail costs you nothing.

The "Local" Moment:

My favorite thing is to go in the late afternoon during October. The way the low sun hits the orange leaves and reflects in the emerald water is something you’ll never forget. Because it is small, it doesn't take long to see, but it’s a spot where you’ll want to linger just to enjoy the total silence.
