A Perfect Day Trip to Malta’s Blue Lagoon
Tips and highlights for an unforgettable day on Comino.

Comino is the smallest of the three Maltese islands, located between Malta and Gozo. Around three square kilometers in size, it’s a peaceful, car-free island dotted with caves, a chapel and an old watchtower. Only a handful of people live here, making it a quiet paradise — and the main reason most visitors come is the Blue Lagoon, with its enchanting, crystal-clear waters. Comino is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, diving or hiking along idyllic paths.
Start your day early and take a ferry from Gozo (Mġarr) or Malta (Ċirkewwa). From Valletta, it’s easiest to take a bus to Ċirkewwa (about an hour) and then the 15–20 minute ferry ride. Boats usually start at 8:00 am and run until mid-to-late afternoon. I always recommend booking tickets online in advance, especially for the first departure — early in the morning, the lagoon is calm, almost empty, and absolutely magical. A round-trip ticket from Gozo costs around 10€ per person.
Once on Comino, its best to rent a deck chair early in the morning for around 15–20€ — it’s worth it to have a prime spot right by the water, with easy access for swimming. Don’t forget your diving mask for snorkeling and, of course, your camera for capturing the unforgettable turquoise waters.
During the day, explore hidden coves and smaller beaches nearby. One highlight is Cominotto Beach, a short walk from the main lagoon, perfect for a quieter swim and amazing photos. Another must-do is a stop at The Fruit Bar, where you can enjoy a pineapple cocktail (10€, refills 5€) while relaxing by the lagoon — refreshing and iconic!
Around midday, the Blue Lagoon can get crowded, so try to have a swim and photos done early and enjoy a relaxing lunch break while the crowds arrive. In the afternoon, explore more of the island, hike along the scenic paths or just float in the clear water.
Finally, take the ferry back to Gozo or Malta, soaking in the view of the lagoon one last time. A day at Comino’s Blue Lagoon is truly unforgettable — turquoise waters, hidden coves and peaceful corners make it one of the most magical places in the Mediterranean.
