A Perfect Rainy Day in Budapest

Rain in Budapest doesn’t have to ruin your plans - here’s how I’d spend a cozy, beautiful day in the city when the weather isn’t ideal.

Budapest is actually such a good city for a rainy day. If the weather turns bad, don’t worry too much - there are still so many places that feel especially cozy, elegant, or atmospheric when it’s grey outside.

If I had a rainy day in Budapest, I’d honestly start with a slow café morning. This city has so many beautiful cafés and brunch spots, and rainy weather is kind of the perfect excuse to take your time. Places like New York Café are especially atmospheric on a gloomy day - and while it’s definitely expensive and the food isn’t the highlight, the interior still makes it worth it once for the experience. If you want something more relaxed, I’d go for one of the city’s many brunch cafés instead.

After that, one of my favorite rainy day ideas is visiting one of Budapest’s beautiful libraries. The Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library is such a special place and honestly feels like a hidden gem. It’s one of those spots that feels calm, elegant, and a little magical - especially when the weather outside isn’t great.

If you’re more in the mood for culture, a museum is a great option too. The Museum of Fine Arts near Heroes’ Square is a really good rainy day stop, and the area is still beautiful even if you’re mostly indoors. You could also visit the Hungarian State Opera if you want something more classic and special.

And of course, one of the most iconic rainy day activities in Budapest is going to a thermal bath. If you don’t mind the weather, this can actually be one of the best times to do it. Sitting in warm thermal water while it’s cold or rainy outside is a very Budapest experience. Just keep in mind that Gellért Bath is currently under renovation, so it’s worth checking the latest status before planning around it. If you want the classic experience, Széchenyi is the easiest choice. If you want something a bit more atmospheric, Rudas can be a great option too.

If the rain gets lighter later in the day, I’d end with a short walk around St. Stephen’s Basilica or the streets near the Jewish Quarter, then go somewhere cozy for dinner. Budapest still looks beautiful in the rain - just in a different, moodier way.

My honest tip: don’t try to force a big sightseeing day if the weather is bad. Budapest is one of those cities where rainy days are best enjoyed a little slower - with a beautiful café, a library or museum, maybe a thermal bath, and a cozy dinner after.
