Nestled within the dramatic landscapes of Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, lies a hikers gem for outdoor enthusiasts - Ukkusissat.

This striking peak, towering over the surrounding fjords and the ocean, is one of the most captivating hiking destinations in the area.

The path to Ukussisat is well-marked with yellow dots on the rocks and follows a steady ascent through rugged terrain. As you make your way up, you'll encounter a mix of grassy slopes, rocky outcrops, and alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers.

The trail is not for the faint-hearted. It is considered a moderately challenging hike, with a steady climb that requires some stamina and agility. The terrain can be uneven, with loose rocks in certain sections, so sturdy footwear and a bit of caution are essential. As you climb higher, the views begin to unfold, and each step feels more rewarding as you get closer to the summit.

It is not an easy route, and I recommend that everyone takes the journey with an experienced guide the first time. It's rare that a year goes by without one or more search and rescure operations being launched.

The summit

Reaching the summit of Ukkusissat - standing at over 1,300 meters, the peak offers a 360-degree panoramic view that is nothing short of breathtaking. From here, you can see Nuuk nestled at the edge of the water, and an endless expanse of mountains and fjords stretching out as far as the eye can see.

Tips for the Hike

  • Best time to go: during the summer months (from June to August) when the weather is milder, and the days are long. However, even in summer, temperatures can be cool, so be prepared with warm clothing, especially for the higher altitudes.

  • Guided hikes: While the trail is somehow marked, some hikers may prefer to join a guided tour

  • Activity level: This hike requires a good level of fitness. If you’re new to hiking, consider starting with shorter hikes in the area to build your stamina before tackling Ukkusissat. I would recommend the smaller mountain peak, Quassussuaq, or the hike around it.

  • What to bring: Be sure to bring a water bottle (you can refill your bottle along the trail), snacks, and layers of clothing. Even in summer, the weather can change rapidly in Greenland, so a waterproof jacket and sturdy hiking boots are essential.

  • Local tip: If you're feel like adding som extra fun and a laugh to your descent - bring a plastic bag, so you can slide down from the mountain peak in the snow that are still covering the summit-area.

This hikers gem promises an unforgettable experience in Greenland's pristine wilderness.
