Castelo de Óbidos ("Óbidos Castle") is a medieval monument located in the municipality of Óbidos, district of Leiria, Portugal, just a little over one hour away from Lisbon by car. The fortification dates back to the 8th century, when the Iberian Peninsula was dominated my the Muslims. However, this area had been previously occupied by the Lusitanos, since the 4th century BC, by the Romans, in the 1st century, and by the Visigoths, during the 5th and 6th century. This place certainly exhales history and visitors can truly feel an ancient atmosphere around here!

The village of Óbidos has a vivid cultural life: On an annual basis, it hosts a chocolate festival, typically taking place in March, as well as a medieval market, which happens every July. Besides that, Óbidos is also the origin of one of the most prestigious ginjinhas of Portugal, the famous liqueur made by infusing ginja berries in alcohol, with added sugar.

Among all the activities visitors can enjoy while in Óbidos, apart from all its great restaurants and bars, it is possible to walk all the way around the internal walls of the fortification, which is an amazing experience overall and an unique way to see the entire village from all angles.
