  • Get your NZeTA before you go
You’ll need the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority to enter. It’s quick, but don’t leave it to the airport.

  • Download CamperMate before landing
This is everything for camper trips, campsites, bathrooms, dump stations, hidden spots. We used it daily.

  • Book your camper early
Especially in peak season, the good ones go fast. Look for self-contained if you want more flexibility.

  • Driving is slower than you think
Distances look short, but roads are windy and you’ll want to stop constantly. Build in extra time.

  • Plan your gas stops
Stations can be far apart in remote areas (like Fiordland or the West Coast).

  • DOC camps > random freedom camping
Department of Conservation sites are cheap, beautiful, and easy. We ended up preferring them most nights.

  • Sandflies are no joke
Especially on the West Coast and in Fiordland. Bring spray, you’ll thank me.

  • Pack layers (always)
Weather changes fast, even in summer. Mornings and evenings can be cold.

  • Groceries > eating out constantly
Food is good but adds up fast. Camper life + simple meals = way easier with kids.

  • Download maps offline
Service drops a lot, especially on drives like Milford Road.

  • Book key activities ahead
Things like glowworm caves, boat tours, and popular hikes/parking areas fill up.
