Sirmione is a charming town located on Lake Garda, in the region of Lombardy in Northern Italy. It has a unique location on a peninsula, that stretches for a few km inside the lake.

To access the town, you have to enter from Castello Scaligero, which was used for defensive purposes in the past. It can be visited (price is €8, but I didn't manage to go in on my visit). The town is very small and it's mostly concentrated in the area nearby the castle. You can find many bars, restaurants and gelaterie. On the rest of the small peninsula there are roads immersed in the green and beautiful beaches with incredible views of the Lake.

On the most northern part of Sirmione, you can find Grotte di Catullo, an archeological site dating back to the Romans.

Sirmione is popular for its thermal baths, so a trip here should include a bit of relax to enjoy the town to the fullest.

Staying in Sirmione: staying here is a great base for exploring Lake Garda, as it's perfectly connected via the ferry, to other destinations on the lake. The town itself is gorgoeus, but as mentioned is quite small, so I'd only consider it on a wider itinerary (if your plan is to explore).

How to reach Sirmione: The best way to reach Sirmione with public transport is by taking the train to Desenzano del Garda (either regional or high-speed. From Milan it takes about 50 minutes with high-speed train or 1 h 20 minutes with regional train.

From Desenzano you'll have to take the Bus Line 26 from Desenzano Station to Sirmione, it takes approximatively 15/20 minutes and it costs €2.
