The Chapel of the Madonna di Vitaleta, framed by rows of cypress trees in the Val d’Orcia, has become one of the most iconic landscapes in the world. Built on the site of an older tabernacle, it once housed a famous statue of the Virgin Mary, attributed to Andrea della Robbia. According to legend, it was the Virgin herself who appeared to a shepherd girl, telling her that the faithful would find the statue in a workshop in Florence to place in the chapel of Vitaleta.
The chapel is reachable after a 10 minutes walk from the parking spot (the exact spot is pinned too nearby). It was one of my favourite spots in Val d'Orcia, spotting the chapel from afar and then getting close to it was lovely. The nearby landscape, as most of Val d'Orcia, is breathtaking and it's a highly recommended spot.
It can get crowded, especially for parking spots, so I'd recommend going early in the morning, before 9:30/10 am max.
