For one of the best views in Hokkaido, head to the Mount Moiwa Ropeway — a scenic cable car ride that takes you above Sapporo’s forests and up to the city’s most famous lookout point. It’s only a few minutes from downtown, but once you start gliding over the trees, everything feels quiet and far away.

The ride itself is beautiful — first, a large gondola takes you halfway up the mountain, then a smaller “Morris Car” ropeway completes the climb to the top. At the summit, you’ll find a modern observation deck with 360° panoramic views of Sapporo, the Ishikari Plain, and even the distant Sea of Japan. As the sun sets, the city lights start to sparkle — it’s no surprise that Mount Moiwa’s night view is considered one of the three best in Hokkaido.

Couples often visit to ring the “Bell of Happiness”, a small heart-shaped bell said to bring luck in love, while photographers and travelers simply stay to enjoy the shifting colors of the sky. Whether you come by day or night, the view is breathtaking.

Why it’s worth it
Because it’s Sapporo’s skyline at its most magical — mountain air, soft lights, and an unforgettable perspective of the city.

🕐 When to go

  • Sunset to evening: best views and lighting.

  • Winter: snow + city lights = pure cinematic magic.

  • Ropeway operates year-round (check for maintenance closures).

💴 Prices

  • Round-trip ticket: ¥1,800 (adults) / ¥900 (children)

  • Observation deck free with ropeway ticket

🚆 How to get there
From Sapporo Station, take the Subway Tozai Line to Maruyama-Kōen Station, then hop on the free shuttle bus or take a short taxi ride (about 10 min) to the Mount Moiwa Ropeway Base Station.

🧭 Waldir tip
Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset — you’ll get both daylight and night views in one trip. Bring a jacket; it can get windy at the top even in summer.
