Order the bánh xèo (crispy turmeric pancake) served with a huge plate of fresh herbs and lettuce. Bánh xèo is a crispy Vietnamese rice pancake made with turmeric, filled with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts, then eaten wrapped in rice paper with fresh herbs and dipped in fish sauce (nước chấm).

Why it’s here

This was our first-ever bánh xèo experience and a perfect introduction. It’s cooked fresh in front of you in a tiny alley, and the owner will often show you exactly how to assemble and eat it properly, which makes it feel especially local and welcoming – this meant a lot to us as we walked in not knowing where to start.

Tip

The stools are very low, so wear comfy clothes and embrace the street-food setup. Go hungry, eat it while it’s hot and crispy, and don’t be shy with the herbs – that’s where the balance comes from as it can quite rich.
