Kiyomizu-dera is one of those places in Kyoto you’ve probably already seen in photos — the big wooden stage overlooking the city and honestly, it’s worth the hype. It sits up on the hillside, so you get beautiful views, but the walk up through the old streets is just as much part of the experience. I’d plan to take your time here rather than rushing in and out, and if you can, go early or later in the day to avoid the biggest crowds. It pairs perfectly with a wander through nearby Higashiyama.

Top tip: Try to arrive around 7am if you can it’s much quieter and you’ll get those classic views before tour groups arrive.

Must-see spots at Kiyomizu-dera:

  • The Main Hall stage for panoramic views

  • Otowa Waterfall and its three streams

  • The bright red Niomon Gate entrance

  • The three-storey pagoda viewpoint

  • Temple garden walking paths

  • Nearby Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka streets
