Te Paki Sand Dunes, also known as the Giant Sand Dunes, are a must-visit when you’re exploring the Far North. Located at the top of the North Island near Cape Reinga, these massive dunes stretch along part of Ninety Mile Beach, and it feels as though you’ve arrived in the Sahara.

The best way to experience these 150m dunes is by sandboarding. If you don’t have your own, you can rent them at the dunes for about $15–$20 NZD. Some petrol stations in Awanui and Pukenui have rentals if you want to grab one before you arrive or, if you’re on a Cape Reinga day tour, there’s a good chance sandboarding is already included in your itinerary, and they’ll provide the gear for you.

Tips for making the most of your day

  • If you plan to combine it with a drive along Ninety Mile Beach, go at low tide (but this is only suitable for 4WD vehicles!)

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the flying sand. Take my word for this… Ouch.

  • Wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water as the dunes are exposed and it can get very hot.

How to get there

Te Paki Sand Dunes are located near the northern tip of New Zealand’s North Island, about 4 hours from Whangārei or 1 hour from Kaitaia. If you’re heading up to Cape Reinga, the dunes are a great stop along the way. The road leading to the dunes is well-maintained, and while it’s mostly gravel near the entrance, it’s accessible by a standard vehicle, so there's no need for a 4WD unless you plan to drive on 90 Mile Beach.
