1. Have the Book of Kells experience at Trinity College
Step into one of the world’s most beautiful libraries – you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported into a fantasy world! The Book of Kells is a stunning and famous 9th-century illustrated Celtic book of the four Gospels, which you’ll get the rare chance to see during the Book of Kells Experience, and the Red Pavilion exhibit does a great job bringing its story to life. After seeing the Book of Kells in its full glory, wander the Long Room of the library, where thousands of ancient books* line wooden shelves under vaulted ceilings.
2. See Dublin Castle
Right in the heart of the city, Dublin Castle blends medieval history with elegant state apartments. It’s been everything from a Viking fortress to a British stronghold, and now it’s one of Dublin’s most important government buildings. You can explore the castle grounds for free or pay a bit to tour the interiors and the ancient Viking excavation site below.
3. Try the Best Fish n Chips in Dublin
You’ll find “chippers” all over town, but if you want the real deal? Head to Leo Burdock (Christchurch), which is the oldest chipper in Dublin, serving since 1913, or Beshoff Bros (various locations) – which is a bit more modern, but still classic and delicious. Don’t forget the malt vinegar and mushy peas!
4. Go Shopping on (& More Importantly) Near Grafton Street
Grafton Street is Dublin’s main shopping strip – but it’s more than just stores. You’ll hear live buskers (some of whom are actually famous!), see flower stalls, and maybe even stumble upon a spontaneous performance. Nearby, pop into Powerscourt Townhouse Centre for indie boutiques and cafés, or check out George’s Street Arcade for vintage vibes and souvenirs that aren’t “tourist tacky.”
5. Walk through St. Stephen’s Green
This peaceful park is like Dublin’s version of Central Park, just smaller, but just as beloved. Take a slow stroll around the duck ponds, have a picnic, spot local artists sketching near the Victorian bandstand, or just sit on a bench and people-watch. It’s especially gorgeous in spring and fall.
