One of the most iconic locations on Lake Como — and easily one of the most photogenic villas in all of Italy. Perched on a wooded peninsula near Lenno, this historic villa became globally famous after appearing in both Star Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale. But even without the movie fame, the atmosphere here feels almost unreal: perfectly sculpted gardens, cypress-lined terraces, dramatic lake views, and a setting that looks more like a film set than a real place.
Unlike many villas around Lake Como, Balbianello is not just about architecture — the entire experience is cinematic. The approach by boat, the hidden pathways, the panoramic terraces, and the sense of isolation make it feel much more immersive than most tourist attractions around the lake.
Important: book tickets in advance
During the main season (May–September), this is one of the busiest attractions on Lake Como, and tickets regularly sell out several days ahead — especially on weekends and sunny days. In summer, many travelers report waiting times of 1–2 hours without reservations. Booking early is highly recommended.

Gardens vs Villa Interior
There are two different ticket types:
Gardens only
Gardens + guided interior villa tour
Many visitors accidentally book only the gardens and later discover they cannot enter the villa itself. The interior visit is guided-only and availability is limited.
For most travelers, the gardens alone are already worth the visit. The villa interior matters mainly for history lovers and photography enthusiasts.
How to reach the villa
There are two ways to access the villa from Lenno:
1. Scenic walking path (recommended)
The walk takes approximately 20–30 minutes and passes through a shaded forest trail with occasional lake views. The path is beautiful but includes some uneven surfaces and moderate uphill/downhill sections.
Good footwear is recommended — especially after rain. Many travelers underestimate the walk when wearing sandals or fashion shoes.
2. Small taxi boat from Lenno
This is the classic Lake Como arrival and by far the most scenic option. Small boats depart regularly from Lido di Lenno and take about 5–7 minutes to reach the villa dock. Boats usually operate every ~20 minutes on a first-come-first-served basis.
This is also the famous “James Bond arrival” perspective and one of the best photo opportunities around the lake.
Best time to visit
The difference between visiting at 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM is enormous.
For the best experience:
Arrive right at opening time
Visit on weekdays if possible
Avoid weekends from June to September
Morning light is significantly better for photography
Crowds become intense from late morning onward
Sunset light here is beautiful, but late afternoon often becomes extremely crowded during peak season.
Ferry logistics
Villa Balbianello works very well as part of a Lake Como ferry day trip from:
Bellagio
Varenna
Menaggio
Como town
Public ferries stop at Lenno, from where you continue by foot or taxi boat. Ferry schedules change seasonally, so always verify the latest timetable before your trip.

Photography tips
The most famous viewpoints are:
the arched terrace overlooking the lake;
the boat dock arrival perspective;
the loggia covered with climbing greenery;
the panoramic terrace facing Bellagio.
Early morning gives the softest light and the cleanest compositions before tour groups arrive.
Drone flying around Lake Como is increasingly restricted and heavily dependent on local conditions, proximity to settlements, and temporary regulations. Many visitors report enforcement becoming stricter compared to previous years.
Practical tips
Bring water — there is a decent amount of walking involved.
Summer temperatures can feel surprisingly hot and humid.
Mobile signal is generally good.
Toilets are available inside the property.
Allocate around 2–3 hours for the full experience.
Combine the villa with Bellagio or Varenna for a full-day itinerary.
Is it worth visiting?
Despite becoming extremely popular on social media, Villa Balbianello is one of the few “Instagram-famous” locations in Northern Italy that genuinely lives up to the hype. The combination of the gardens, lake scenery, cinematic atmosphere, and boat access makes it feel far more special than many other crowded attractions around Lake Como.
