Pumpulikirkko – Our First Nature Trail Adventure… Yeehaw! 🌲🥾

Pumpulikirkko was definitely worth the visit – though the journey there was… interesting. :)
Let’s just say: not the easiest nature trail if you’ve got little kids with you – just a heads-up! But along the way, we were serenaded by birdsong and the gentle trickling of forest streams, all while carefully watching our steps and squishing through damp forest floor in soggy shoes. 😅

We laughed as we drove along the winding dirt road, saying, "Well, here we are… deep in the middle of nowhere – Rautavaara wilderness, totally!"
Eventually, we found the parking area, and from there it was about a 1.3 km hike to Pumpulikirkko.

And the acoustics inside Pumpulikirkko? Absolutely incredible.
The boys ran ahead, and let’s just say… we definitely heard them once they found the spot! 😄 There were even blocks of ice still there – in June!

We had a small picnic right there – the kids jumped from rock to rock, full of curiosity and wonder. It was such a cool and mysterious place. Truly worth seeing.

Apparently, some couples have even gotten married there – though honestly, we can’t imagine walking that trail in a wedding dress!

🏞 HISTORY

Pumpulikirkko is part of Tiilikkajärvi National Park. It's located deep in the forest, where you'll find a small clearing. Pumpulikirkko lies on the western rock wall of that clearing.

It’s a massive giant’s kettle, formed by powerful meltwaters during the final stages of the Ice Age – around 10,000 years ago. One side of the formation has collapsed, allowing you to step inside and observe it from within. It’s like standing in a natural cathedral carved by time and ice. 🧊
