The Stoosbahn is the steepest funicular train in the world, transporting visitors to the car-free alpine village Stoos in central Switzerland.

The funicular has spherical cabins that keep you upright as you ascend 744 meters, at times at a gradient of 110% (47 degrees). It pass through tunnels and over bridges, with stunning views of the surrounding alps.

It's a fast ride, covering 1.7 km (1.1 mi) in just 8 mins. When you arrive in Stoos, most ride chair lifts to viewpoints and hiking trails.

How to get there

By car: Drive to Grundstrasse 232, 6430 Schwyz, about 50 mins from Lucerne or Zurich. Metered parking next to the funicular station in a parking structure or open parking.

By public transport: Train to Schwyz, then bus to Schwyz, Stoosbahn stop. From Lucerne or Zurich about 1h20.

Tickets

Most visitors will need the "Peak Experience" ticket, which includes the funicular and chair lifts. If you are hiking the ridge trail or visiting the Fronalpstock viewpoint, this is the correct ticket.

The ticket is slightly cheaper if you buy it online, plus you can skip the line at the ticket counter.
