One of the true highlights of the Canadian Rockies, the Maligne Lake Cruise is the kind of experience that earns its reputation entirely. Stretching 22 kilometres, Maligne Lake is the longest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, its colour shifting from emerald to turquoise as the boat moves deeper into the heart of the valley — fed by glaciers and coloured by the fine rock flour suspended in its depths.

The 90-minute Classic Cruise glides past sheer mountain walls, through the dramatic narrows, and deep into the Hall of the Gods — a box canyon of towering peaks rising steeply from the water — before arriving at Spirit Island. And Spirit Island is the moment. A small cluster of spruce trees on a rocky peninsula surrounded on three sides by soaring mountain peaks, it holds deep sacred significance for the Stoney Nakoda Nation who have known this place for thousands of years. Walking on the island itself is prohibited out of respect for that significance, but the short trail to the viewing platform delivers one of the most photographed and genuinely moving views in all of Canada. We find it completely magical every time.

Tip: Book well in advance — this sells out consistently in July and August. Download your tickets before leaving Jasper as there is no cell signal at the lake. Early morning and late afternoon departures offer the best light and the calmest water.
