All about money!
Peru uses the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Most travelers find it easy to withdraw cash from ATMs (Scotiabank and BCP are reliable), but always notify your bank beforehand and check for foreign transaction fees. ATMs are plentiful in major cities but can be harder to find in remote areas—so stock up before heading out.
Cash is king in small towns, markets, and with taxis or local eateries, while mid-range and high-end hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities usually accept Visa and Mastercard (AMEX is less common). It’s best to carry small bills and coins, especially for tips or street food. Avoid exchanging money on the street—casas de cambio (currency exchange houses) offer fair rates and are safer.
Try to have a credit card with zero foreign transaction fees, and always, if asked, have them charge you in the local currency.
