Here are the best local foods in Hokkaido you shouldn’t miss (and are my favourite foods, too)
🦀 1. Kaisen-don (Seafood Rice Bowl)
Topped with uni (sea urchin), ikura (salmon roe), crab, scallops, and sashimi.
Best in coastal towns like Otaru, Hakodate, or Sapporo’s Nijo Market.
🦞 2. Hokkaido Crab (Kani)
Try king crab (tarabagani), hairy crab (kegani), or snow crab (zuwaigani).
Often served grilled, steamed, or in hot pot (kani nabe).
🍜 3. Sapporo Miso Ramen
Rich miso-based broth with corn, butter, and thick noodles.
Found everywhere in Sapporo Ramen Alley.
🐄 4. Jingisukan (Grilled Lamb BBQ)
Named after Genghis Khan, this DIY lamb BBQ is cooked on a domed grill.
Popular in beer gardens like Sapporo Beer Garden.
🥟 5. Soup Curry
• Spicy, thin curry broth with vegetables and meat—originated in Sapporo.
Flavorful and customizable (spice level, toppings).
🍦 6. Hokkaido Soft Cream
Made from rich local milk—extra creamy.
Try lavender, melon, or milk flavor.
🐟 7. Ishikari Nabe
Salmon hot pot with miso broth, vegetables, and tofu.
A traditional winter comfort dish from the Ishikari region.
🌽 8. Tokachi Corn, Potatoes, and Dairy
Hokkaido’s vast farmland produces Japan’s best dairy, corn, and potatoes.
Try cheese tarts, butter, or milk pudding.
🍈 9. Yubari Melon
Juicy and sweet, these melons are luxury gifts in Japan.
Try it fresh or in parfaits, jelly, or soft serve.
🍣 10. Sushi (Hakodate or Otaru-style)
Exceptionally fresh thanks to local seafood—don’t miss uni, hotate (scallop), or kani nigiri
