Every evening right before sunset, a colony of Blue Penguins return home from their day's fishing here. They make their way into the Oamaru Harbor. You can spot them for FREE along the Esplanade and Waterfront Road lining the harbor. Just walk the harbor along these roads up and down and keep an eye out for the penguins. You can also see the penguins in the Colony Center (which is the pinpoint on this map). For general entry in the evening, they charge $NZ45. You get to see them from a grandstand. To be very honest, we found the Colony Center a bit overpriced. You're not allowed to take photos and you can only observe quietly from the grandstand. On the bright side, your visit does support the colony's conservation and research efforts... So it's up to you on how you want to spot these cute little penguins!
