☀️ Best Time to Visit Vietnam (Hanoi, Cat Ba & Cao bang, Ninh Binh)

North Vietnam, Vietnam
🇻🇳North Vietnam has real seasons, unlike the south of the country. That means your experience can feel very different depending on when you visit.
☀️The dry and cooler season (October–April) is generally considered the best time to travel in the north. Temperatures are more comfortable, humidity is lower, and rainfall is significantly reduced compared to summer. In Hanoi and the lowlands, daytime temperatures usually range between 18–26°C, while evenings can feel fresh. In mountainous areas like Cao Bằng, winter (December–February) can drop to 8–15°C and feel surprisingly cold - especially since most accommodations don’t have proper heating. Expect some grey skies and mist during winter months, but the fog over limestone mountains can create a very atmospheric, almost mystical landscape.
But also March–April and October–November can seen as the ideal months: pleasant temperatures, relatively clear skies, and manageable tourist numbers. These months are perfect for exploring Hanoi’s old quarter, cycling through Tam Cốc’s karst landscapes, trekking in Cao Bằng, or cruising around Cát Bà and nearby bays with calm waters.
🌦️The rainy and hot season (May–September) brings a completely different vibe. Temperatures often climb to 30–35°C with high humidity. Rainfall peaks between June and August, usually in the form of heavy afternoon showers or tropical downpours. That said, it doesn’t necessarily rain all day - storms can be intense but short-lived.
This season has one major advantage: the landscapes turn incredibly lush and green. The rice fields around Tam Cốc and in northern valleys are at their most vibrant, waterfalls in Cao Bằng are powerful and dramatic, and the countryside looks alive and tropical. If you’re chasing bright green rice paddies and dramatic scenery, summer is actually the best time - as long as you’re flexible with your plans.
But: Coastal areas like Cát Bà can occasionally be affected by tropical storms or typhoons, especially in July and August. Boat tours may be postponed during severe weather. In mountainous regions, roads can become muddy and slippery, so extra planning is wise if you’re exploring more remote areas.
Overall, North Vietnam offers something beautiful year-round — but timing really shapes your experience.
✨ Our experience
We visited in January, right in the middle of winter.
In Cao Bang, it was honestly very cold. Our hotel was not prepared for the low temperatures and we had freezing nights. Many places don’t have proper heating, so if you travel with kids, definitely bring warm clothes, layers and maybe even warm pajamas. Nights can feel much colder than the temperature suggests because of the humidity.
In Hanoi, Tam Coc and Cat Ba, the weather felt almost perfect for exploring - not too hot, not too cold. We had comfortable sightseeing temperatures and clear skies. However, swimming wasn’t really possible everywhere because the water was simply too cold in January.
We had no rain at all during the whole month we visited, which was pretty cool tho.
TLTR;
Want cooler hiking weather and comfortable city exploring? → Go between October and April.
Want vivid green rice fields and dramatic waterfalls? → Choose the rainy season.
Want the best balance of both? → March–April or October are the sweet spots.
No matter when you go, pack layers, bring a light rain jacket, and expect the weather to change quickly, especially in the mountains.
