These are the spots that draw travelers from all over the world, and it's easy to see why. Whether you're standing before the jagged peaks of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, gazing at the crystal-clear waters of Lago di Braies, or soaking in the beauty of Cortina d’Ampezzo, these are the landmarks that make the Dolomites famous.
The itinerary I've put together focuses on these must-see highlights, but depending on how much time you want to spend at each location—whether you're catching a sunrise, sunset, or exploring during the day—there's room to adjust your schedule. The idea here is to keep it simple, without overcrowding your days with too many places. However, if you find that you have extra time, don't hesitate to check out the interactive map and explore some nearby gems that might catch your interest. The Dolomites are full of hidden treasures waiting to be discovered.

Since everyone arrives at different times on the first day, we'll start off easy. Check into a accommodation near Lago di Braies, and if you have time, you can explore this beautiful spot and enjoy the sunset.

Gasthof Tuscherhof – A Comfortable and Affordable Stay Near Prager Wildsee (Lago di Braies)
We’ve stayed at Gasthof Tuscherhof several times when we’re in the area to visit places like Prager Wildsee. What I love about this place is its proximity to the lake, it's just a short drive away and, compared to many other accommodations in the area, it’s quite affordable.
The breakfast is really good, and it’s perfect for those early risers who want to visit the lake at sunrise and then come back to enjoy a nice meal. If this place doesn’t work for you or is fully booked, I’d recommend looking for alternatives in the area, as the proximity to the lake really makes a big difference.

I’ve visited the Pragser Wildsee countless times and during all seasons, so trust me when I say: read this guide to avoid any unpleasant surprises! 😄 The Pragser Wildsee is arguably the most famous lake in South Tyrol, which also makes it incredibly popular with tourists. While the lake is breathtakingly beautiful, there are a few things you should know before your visit:
The Challenges of Visiting Pragser Wildsee
Crowds:
This lake attracts a lot of visitors, especially during peak season. Both the lake itself and the parking lots can get very crowded.
To avoid the worst of the crowds, I highly recommend arriving very early—ideally at sunrise. At this time, the atmosphere is peaceful, and there are far fewer people than around midday.
However, even at sunrise, you may encounter some photographers and other early risers, especially on weekends or holidays. Midweek visits, particularly during the off-season, are even quieter.
Parking Issues and Road Closures:
Road Closures: From early July to mid-September, the road to the Pragser Wildsee is closed to private vehicles daily between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM (if you haven't booked a parking in advanced).
Parking Costs: The parking fees vary depending on which lot you choose:
P4: The closest to the lake but also the most expensive. It costs €15 for 3 hours or €20 for the whole day.
P3: A bit further away but more affordable, costing only €10 for the whole day.
P2: The cheapest option at just €6 per day. It’s located a few hundred meters further from the lake, but the walk is short and pleasant.
Booking in Advance: During the summer season, it’s essential to book your parking spot online in advance if you plan to visit between 9:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Without a reservation, you’ll need to park further away and use public transportation to reach the lake. BUT It’s also very important to note that a parking ticket with an online reservation is much more expensive than purchasing your ticket directly on-site before 9:30 AM or after 4:00 PM. That’s why I’d definitely recommend arriving early.
Visiting at Sunset: If you visit after 4:00 PM, the road reopens, and you don’t need a reservation. Sunset visits are also much quieter than midday, offering a more relaxed experience.

Wooden Boats:
If paddling one of the iconic wooden boats is on your bucket list, you’ll need to visit between morning and afternoon when the boat rental is open. Keep in mind this is also the lake’s busiest time. Rental prices are around €19 for 30 minutes and €29 for an hour, but double-check as prices may change.

Perfect Photos:
For those dreamy photos with the lake’s magical mirror-like reflection, check the weather forecast beforehand. The lake is only calm enough for a perfect reflection when it’s almost windstill.
Wind Conditions: The wind speed should ideally be no higher than 5 km/h to achieve a smooth surface.
Best Times for Reflection: The chances of windstill conditions are significantly higher at sunrise and sunset compared to the middle of the day, making these the best times for photography.
My Advice
Best Time to Visit: Sunrise for peace and stunning light. Sunset for fewer crowds and easier access.
Parking: Always book a spot in advance during peak season if you’re not arriving at sunrise.
Activities: Plan your visit around whether you want to hike around the lake, enjoy the serene atmosphere, or paddle on the water.
Photography Tip: Always check the wind forecast for speeds below 5 km/h to capture those magical reflections.
Pragser Wildsee is undoubtedly a magical place, but with proper planning, your visit will be even more enjoyable!
