Located about 1 hour 45 minutes (around 75 km / 46 miles) from La Fortuna, Bijagual Waterfall is one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls in Costa Rica, yet it remains far less visited than many of the country’s famous waterfalls. Hidden deep in the rainforest near Carara National Park, this massive waterfall drops over 180 meters (600 feet) down a lush green cliff, creating an incredible jungle scene that feels completely wild and untouched.

The best and safest way to see the waterfall is from Mirador Bijagual, a private viewpoint located on a mountain ridge directly facing the falls. From the parking area, visitors take a short but steep hike (about 10–15 minutes) through tropical forest to reach the viewing platform, where you get a panoramic view of the enormous waterfall surrounded by dense jungle and mountains. On clear days you can even see the Pacific coastline in the distance.

Entrance to the viewpoint is usually around $15–$20 USD per person, which helps maintain the trail and property. The location has easy parking right at the entrance, and visitors will find basic bathrooms available near the parking area. However, there are no changing rooms and no access to swim at the waterfall, since the viewpoint is high above the falls and the terrain below is extremely rugged. There is often a small restaurant or café on site where you can enjoy drinks or food while taking in the views.

Because of its location between the mountains and the Pacific rainforest, the area is also excellent for wildlife spotting, and visitors sometimes see scarlet macaws, toucans, monkeys, and butterflies while walking to the viewpoint. The surrounding forest is part of a biological corridor connected to Carara National Park, which is one of the best places in Costa Rica for birdwatching.
