Palácio Nacional da Ajuda ("Palace of Ajuda") is a neoclassical monument in the neighborhood of Ajuda, which originally served, as a temporary wooden building, to house the Portuguese royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami that destroyed the city of Lisbon. Unsurprisingly, the palace is located on the top of the Ajuda hill.

The palace still preserves the layout and decoration of the rooms in the style of the 19th century.

In 2021, a modern facade was concluded in the palace's western wing. This is where the Portuguese Crown Jewels are kept and exhibited in a magnificent museum, which also includes important collections of paintings, tapestry, furniture, glass and ceramics from the 18th and 19th centuries.

If you enjoy walking, we recommend you to go all the way from where the monuments are situated in Belém to Palácio Nacional da Ajuda through Calçada da Ajuda ("Ajuda sidewalk"). It is a steep street that connects both spots. This is the best way to capture the soul and atmosphere of the Ajuda neighborhood too!
