One of the most iconic and surreal landscapes in Death Valley National Park—and in all of North America. Sitting at 282 feet below sea level, it holds the title of the lowest point on the continent. The basin's vast salt flats stretch for miles, creating mesmerizing hexagonal patterns formed by freeze-thaw cycles and evaporation over time. These natural textures make it a favorite among photographers, especially during sunrise or sunset when soft light accentuates the unique surface.

At the main viewing area, you’ll find a small spring-fed pool of “bad water,” undrinkable due to the high salinity from surrounding salt deposits. This harsh but fascinating ecosystem supports life like the Badwater snail and hardy desert vegetation like pickleweed. Above the basin, a sign marks the sea level line—offering a dramatic visual of just how low the area is.

Badwater Basin is accessible by a short walk from the parking area. It's a flat trail, but be prepared for extreme temperatures—especially in summer when it can be one of the hottest places on Earth. Bring plenty of water, wear sun protection, and avoid mid-day hikes.

There are no facilities at the basin itself, but nearby Furnace Creek offers camping, lodging, fuel, and a visitor center. Camping is not permitted at Badwater Basin, but backcountry and developed campgrounds are available elsewhere in the park. Always check National Park Service regulations before setting up camp.

Dogs are allowed at Badwater Basin but must be kept on a leash and are not permitted on trails or boardwalks—be mindful of the extreme heat, as it can be dangerous for pets, especially during warmer months.
