The Whangamumu Whaling/Sealing Station in Rawhiti was a bustling hub for whaling operations back in the 1800s and early 1900s. It was known for its unique method of catching whales with nets, making it the only one of its kind in the world. The site boasts historic structures like oil tanks, a slipway, and an old boiler, giving visitors a glimpse into Northland's whaling history. Despite facing challenges like market fluctuations and environmental impacts, the station remained operational until it eventually closed down in 1940. Today, you can access this piece of maritime history by boat or take a scenic one-hour walk from the road.
