You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world on this wild and windswept track at the very tip of the country.

Cape Maria van Diemen is a remote and breathtaking destination, known for its dramatic coastal cliffs, golden sand dunes, and striking contrasts between ocean and land. This is one of the lesser-trodden adventures near Cape Reinga, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds and soak in rugged beauty.

The loop hike is around 23 km if you follow the AllTrails route, taking most walkers 6–8 hours to complete. It’s a challenging journey, with soft sand sections, steep climbs, and exposure to the elements — but the payoff is immense. From the high points of the track, you'll get sweeping views of the Tasman Sea, Te Werahi Beach, and the rocky silhouette of Cape Maria van Diemen reaching out into the waves. 🌊

There are no facilities along the trail, so be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sun protection. This route is best suited for experienced hikers prepared for a full-day mission.

Visitor Reviews

“Absolutely stunning walk — totally worth the effort. The rolling dunes, the remote beach, and the views from the top make it feel like you’ve discovered something special. Not an easy hike, but one of the best in the north.” — Aimee, January 2024

“The sand can be tough on the legs but wow, what a reward. You feel completely alone with nature out there. Saw wild surf, heaps of birds, and felt like I was on the edge of the earth.” — Liam, February 2024
