🌿 Cloud Forest Areas in Costa Rica
If you’re looking to experience Costa Rica beyond the beaches, these are the places where you’ll find our cloud forests—mountain areas full of mist, greenery, and some of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
🌫️ Monteverde
Monteverde is definitely my favorite area.
It’s one of the most visited and touristic cloud forest destinations in Costa Rica, but there is so much to enjoy here. From walking across hanging bridges to canopy tours and beautiful scenic routes, this area has a bit of everything.
It’s also one of the best places in the country to watch the sunset, which many people don’t expect.
You’ll find many beautiful Airbnbs and great restaurants, and I’ve added my personal recommendations on the map.
💡 Personal tip:
If you only have one day in Monteverde, go to El Tigre Waterfalls. The experience has a bit of everything, and the place is absolutely beautiful.
🌄 Dota / Los Santos Area
This is another one of my favorite regions.
I love this area because it’s full of forest and has a strong coffee culture. It’s one of those places where you can really feel a more authentic Costa Rican vibe.
You’ll find stays all around the Los Santos region, many of them surrounded by nature, and also more hotel options around San Gerardo de Dota, which is slightly more developed.
I personally recommend staying in Airbnbs here.
This area is also home to some of my favorite scenic routes in the country (you can find them on the map), which makes the experience even better.
🌿 Tapantí / Orosi Area
The Tapantí area, near Orosi, is one of the least visited by tourists.
If you’re looking to experience a more local and authentic side of Costa Rica, I definitely recommend coming here.
The vibe feels very local, very natural, and less influenced by tourism. I’ve added a few spots on the map that you can use to explore the area.
💡 My recommendation:
Spend one night here—it’s enough to experience the area and continue your route.
✨ Final thought
Each of these places offers a different way to experience Costa Rica’s cloud forests.
If you want something more complete and active → Monteverde
If you want something more local and scenic → Dota
If you want something more authentic and less touristy → Tapantí
