Reaching Mandativu Island feels like stepping into another world. The birdwatching area in the lagoon boasts unique vegetation and is a fantastic spot for bird lovers hoping to catch a glimpse of some extraordinary feathered friends.

Located just outside Jaffna, this area is home to a diverse range of bird species, both resident and migratory. With its tranquil surroundings and rich avian life, Mandativu offers a peaceful and rewarding experience for anyone looking to connect with nature and admire Sri Lanka’s birdlife. So, grab your binoculars and get ready for a bird-watching adventure!

And yes—if you're lucky, you might even spot flamingos! Greater Flamingos migrate to Sri Lanka from Europe during the winter months. They are most commonly found in lagoons, mudflats, and shallow coastal waters around Jaffna and Mannar.

The muddy estuaries serve as a haven for flamingos and a variety of small waders, while spoonbills and terns frequent the freshwater lakes. And if you listen carefully, you might even hear the song of skylarks filling the sky.

BEST TIME TO GO: Birdwatching in Jaffna is most rewarding between September and March, when thousands of migratory birds flock to the Jaffna Lagoon—a breathtaking sight not to be missed. Towards the end of the year, the lagoons fill with water, the paddy fields turn lush green, and the air becomes pleasantly cooler, making it the perfect time to explore the region.

DO visit with a tour or your own vehicle. The best route is to leave the AB19 causeway at the Mandativu junctionand enjoy the scenic drive.

DON’T stray off the road—please respect nature and leave it undisturbed. There are plenty of smaller roads and paths to follow, so stick to them and enjoy the beauty of the landscape responsibly.
