The Schöllenen Gorge near Andermatt is a dramatic natural landmark shaped by the rushing waters of the Reuss River. Carved deep into the rock, this steep and narrow gorge has long been a crucial passage through the Alps. One of its most famous features is the Devil’s Bridge (Teufelsbrücke), a legendary crossing point with a history dating back centuries.

According to legend, the original bridge was built with the help of the devil, who demanded the soul of the first to cross it as payment. The locals outwitted him by sending a goat across first, leaving the devil furious and smashing part of the bridge in anger. Today, two bridges stand here—one from the 19th century and a modern one used for traffic—offering an impressive view of the gorge and the powerful river below.

Hike from Andermatt to Göschenen

A great way to experience the area is by hiking from Andermatt to the Schöllenen Gorge and continuing onward to Göschenen. The trail follows historic paths, passing the Devil’s Bridge, old military fortifications and viewpoints overlooking the rugged landscape. The hike follows a well-marked route with a mix of rocky paths and wooden walkways.
