Packing List for each Season 👚👖👢

We are constantly being asked what to bring when visiting NZ, which is why we have created this list to give you a little bit of an idea.

New Zealand

🌸 Spring (September-November)

North Island:

  • Light layers (t-shirts, long sleeves, light jumper)

  • Waterproof jacket (showers are common)

  • Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers

  • Jeans/leggings for cooler mornings/evenings

  • Sunglasses & sunscreen (UV can already be strong)

  • Light scarf for wind

South Island:

  • Warm layers (merino base layer, fleece, puffer)

  • Waterproof/windproof jacket

  • Sturdy walking shoes/hiking boots

  • Beanie & gloves for alpine areas

  • Sunglasses & sunscreen

  • Thermal leggings (if visiting mountains or doing early hikes)

☀️ Summer (December-February)

North Island:

  • Shorts, t-shirts, light dresses

  • Sun hat & sunglasses

  • Swimwear & beach towel

  • Sandals/jandals + walking shoes

  • Light rain jacket (summer showers)

  • Reusable water bottle

South Island:

  • Layers (days can be hot, nights cool)

  • Shorts/t-shirts, but also a warm jumper

  • Waterproof jacket (changeable weather)

  • Hiking shoes/boots for trails

  • Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses)

  • Swimwear (lakes, rivers, hot pools)

🍂 Autumn (March-May)

North Island:

  • Light to medium layers (t-shirts, sweaters, light jackets)

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Rain jacket/umbrella

  • Scarf (mornings/evenings can be crisp)

  • Warm socks for cooler nights

South Island:

  • Warm layers (merino/fleece, jacket)

  • Waterproof jacket (rain is common)

  • Hiking boots (autumn colours are great for walks)

  • Beanie & gloves (especially in May)

  • Thermals if heading into alpine areas

❄️ Winter (June-August)

North Island:

  • Warm layers (sweaters, jackets)

  • Raincoat (winter showers common)

  • Jeans/leggings

  • Comfortable closed shoes

  • Umbrella for city days

  • Scarf/hat (especially in Wellington & central plateau)

South Island:

  • Heavy layers (down jacket, thermals, fleece)

  • Waterproof outerwear

  • Beanie, gloves, scarf essential

  • Thermal socks & sturdy shoes/boots (snow possible)

  • Ski gear if visiting Queenstown/Wanaka or Mt Hutt etc

  • Sunglasses (snow glare can be strong)
