🚁 Unnamed Crater near Veiðivötn
🗺️ How to Get There:
From the F26 highland road, follow the rough tracks into the Veiðivötn area, heading toward the northern lakes. Just before the first river crossing, this crater sits visible on the right side of the track. A 4×4 is mandatory, and driving conditions vary based on rainfall and snowmelt. Park before the river crossing but NOT off-road.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible only in summer (late June–September) for regular 4x4s, when highland routes open. Conditions are best in July–August, when roads are dry and colors are bold. Not accessible in winter for regular cars due to snow coverage and closed F-roads.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Midday to late afternoon for even light across the crater. Early morning and golden hour are ideal if clouds are low and directional light hits from the east.
Recommended gear:
Drone is essential, top-down and oblique aerials show off the perfect shape and isolation. Wide-angle lens from the ground can frame the crater against the vast plains if hiking nearby.
Composition ideas:
Top-down shots emphasize the elliptical shape and high contrast between water and terrain
Oblique drone angles that include the distant Tungnaá river or Veiðivötn lakes for depth
Use humans or a vehicle for scale reference in the black desert
Great for minimalist compositions and abstract aerials
