What you'll do
It can be difficult to know which restaurants you should go to in a foreign country. Luckily I've tried a lot of them and can tell you which ones are my favorite!
Day 1
These 13 restaurants all around Iceland are my top picks. When I am driving around the island I always try to eat at these places. Some of them are a bit pricier, but I just really like good food.
Typical Icelandic food is lamb or fish (often cod). So definitely try those if you want a taste of the local cuisine. In case you are vegetarian or vegan, don't worry! Most restaurants have very good options for you too.
Friðheimar
restaurante
Have lunch in a greenhouse
In the south of Iceland, you'll find several greenhouses. They are heated with geothermal warm water. Visiting a green house was maybe not on your bucket list, but this one should be.
At Friðheimar you get to sit in a tomato greenhouse and enjoy a great tomato soup at the same time. And don't forget to try the bread as well!
Restaurant Mika

Nice restaurant on the ring road
I really like this restaurant. The food is great, there's something in every price category and there's a good atmosphere.
Hotel Restaurant Geysir
restaurante
Restaurant with a view
Right next to one of the most famous tourist spots, you'll find this restaurant. It is a bit more expensive, but they have really good food.
Kaffi Krús
restaurante
Best restaurant in Selfoss
Whenever I am in the south I try to visit this restaurant. The food is great and if the weather is nice it is really nice to sit outside in the sun. There's not always many opportunities for that in Iceland, so when the sun is out, enjoy this place!
Pakkhús Restaurant
restaurante
My favorite restaurant in Höfn
Whenever I am in Höfn, I need to eat here. The food is great and the atmosphere really nice.
Höfn is known for their langoustines (lobster), but don't expect massive lobsters here, they are more the size of big shrimps. But nevertheless they are amazing. So definitely go and try them out here.
If you are on a budget, but still want to try the lobster, you could also go for the soup. It's really good to and more affordable.
Otto Matur & Drykkur

Great restaurant in the south east
I only recently found this restaurant, but I really like it! Definitely want to go here again and so should you!
Nielsen restaurant

Best restaurant in Egilsstaðir
I think I had the best meal in Iceland in this restaurant. So make sure you have a reservation when driving to Egilsstaðir.
Glóð Restaurant
restaurante
Restaurant in Egilsstaðir
During one stay in the east, I ate at this restaurant three nights in a row because I loved it so much. There's great pizza, pasta, tacos, sushi and more. So you'll definitely find something you like here.
Restaurant Fosshotel Húsavík
restaurante
Restaurant Fosshotel Húsavík
The restaurant in this hotel is definitely worth a visit. I loved the “Húsavík feast” menu.
Salka Restaurant
restaurante
My favorite restaurant in Húsavík
This is my favourite restaurant in Húsavík. They have a wide variety of dishes and they are all great. And in summer you might even be able to sit outside!
North Restaurant
restaurante
Icelandic-inspired cuisine in Akureyri
I personally only "found out" about this hidden gem months after it opened. For some reason it is pretty hidden and mysterious. It is located inside Hotel Akureyri, so it doesn't even have it's own entrance. The restaurant is super tiny and it almost feels like you are inside someone's living room. Inside an amazing chef's living room, to be exact :)
North Restaurant is one of the fancier restaurants in Akureyri. It is from the same owners as Dill Restaurant in Reykjavík, which has a Michelin star.
Aurora Restaurant
restaurante
One of my favorites at the moment
This restaurant is a new favorite of mine in Akureyri. The menu is very unique and diverse. I loved everything I´ve had here so far. The restaurant is inside The Berjaya Hotel.
The food is quite fancy, so this is really the perfect place for a nice night out (not if you just want to quickly eat something). The portions are not as big as you are used to in Iceland so keep that in mind when ordering. They are more European style sizes, while many places in Iceland go for American sizes.
So definitely go here if you want a nice night out with fancy and amazing food.
Rub23
restaurante
The best restaurant in town
In case you love food, you'll love this place. In my opinion it is one of the best restaurants in town.
Rub23 is not the cheapest (a bit of an understatement), but it is worth the money.
They have several tasting menus, which they call "festivals". And for good reason, because it is an absolute party to try all the different courses. If you have the time and money for it, I can highly recommend trying one of these festivals.
If you just try a main course, and not the tasting menu, it will be cheaper of course
Fjaka
restaurante
Cozy Icelandic restaurant with modern twist
The shrimp crêpe I had here was delicious. 10/10 would recommend.
This food truck is in the middle of Akureyri, so you can not miss it when you walk along the main street!
Gisli Eirikur Helgi Kaffihûs Bakkabrædra
restaurante
The best fish soup place
If you like fish, or soup, or both. This is the place to be! Fish soup is a big thing in Dalvík, so being known for having the best fish soup in this town is a real honor.
The soup is amazing, the bread and salat are great and they have amazing cakes. O, and it looks super cute and cozy from the inside too. So go check it out.
Narfeyrarstofa
restaurante
Best restaurant in Stykkishólmur
Whenever I go to Stykkishólmur, I look forward to eating at this restaurant. They have really great food and it is situated in a super cute building.
You might want to make a reservation. There are nit many eating options in Stykkishólmur, so if you want to eat in the best place in town, you might want to let them know in advance.
Hlaðan Veitingahús
restaurante
Hlaðan Veitingahús
This lovely restaurant at Miðhraun - Lava Resort has opened last summer (2022), so it is a brand new place. The restaurant venue looks amazing. Everything has been thought about and many things have been hand made. Which really gives a great atmosphere.
I was lucky to try the menu just before the official opening this year (1st of June 2023) and it did not disappoint. Óskar, the chef, did a great job representing the Icelandic cuisine. If you want to try local products (lamb and fish), I would definitely recommend going here.
I personally really loved the soup and the lamb!
The Settlement Center
restaurante
Restaurant and museum in one
This is one of my favorite restaurants. They usually have a really good all you can eat lunch menu, so of you are in the area around lunch, go check it out. Also many great vegetarian options.
And after you have finished eating you might still have some time to go to the museum downstairs. There you will learn about the first people that came to Iceland. It is very interesting, I think!
Solon Islandus
restaurante
Bistro-style Icelandic restaurant in Reykjavik
Sólon Íslandus is a bistro-style restaurant located in the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland.
The food is pretty affordable compared to other restaurants in the area. I really enjoyed all the food I've tried there!
And the interior style is also really pretty.
Sushi Social
restaurante
"Unique Icelandic-Japanese-South American food."
This is the place to gather with friends for the best fish dishes in Reykjavik! Their unique take on Icelandic food, combined with Japanese and South American influences, offers a wide variety of dishes ranging from small courses to sushi to main courses.
Have a festival of flavors with their exciting share plates or choose their Icelandic feast, which includes the national aperitif 'Brennivin' and a delicious Skyr infused with birch. With its intricate interior design featuring fifty Japanese birdcages and hand-carved Brazilian curios, it's sure to be a fun and enjoyable dining experience.

Delicious ice cream
This ice cream shop serves the best ice cream.
Founded in 2021, they make their ice cream with traditional recipes and using only the best of high quality ingredients.
With their wide variety of flavors (incl. vegan options), there's something for everyone to enjoy! I choose chocolat with lakkris and raspberry sorbet!
