Dolomites, Italy
General Tips
The best way to explore the Dolomites is by car.
Driving from Milan makes it easy to connect the main lakes, viewpoints, and hikes at your own pace.
Plan stops between lakes: Lago di Dobbiaco → Lago di Landro → Lago d’Antorno for an incredible scenic drive.
Don’t miss the viewpoint at Vista Panoramica Tre Cime di Lavaredo for one of the best views of the Dolomites.
Allow time for spontaneous stops, some of the best views happen while driving between locations.
Summer Tips
Start early. Iconic spots like Lago di Braies get extremely crowded in summer.
Parking areas at popular lakes fill up quickly, especially mid-morning.
Expect busy trails around lakes like Lago di Dobbiaco, but quieter moments can still be found early or near sunset.
Summer is the best time for longer hikes such as those around Alpe di Siusi.
Bring sun protection and plenty of water, altitude and summer sun can be intense.
The Seceda hike down can get very steep and be very challenging if you have knee or joint problems.
Spring Tips (April / early season)
Higher altitude areas around Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Alpe di Siusi may still have snow-covered trails.
Some hiking paths can be icy or slippery, so good hiking shoes are essential.
Lakes can look very different in spring; you might see frozen surfaces, lower water levels, or snow-covered landscapes, especially at Lago d’Antorno.
Weather can shift quickly between sun, fog, rain, and even snow, so pack layers.
The upside: far fewer crowds than in peak summer, making places like Lago di Braies much quieter and ideal for photos, especially early morning with sun reflection on the mountains.
Lower cost to access top spots off-season.
