The Castello di Lusuolo is an impressive medieval fortification originally built to protect the area from invaders. That said, the castle suffered quite a bit from from the attacks of the Genoese Campofregoso, the Florentines, and the Milanese.

Today, the partially restored castle houses the Museo dell'Emigrazione della Gente di Toscana, a museum dedicated to the history of Tuscan emigration. The museum features educational activities and exhibits about the powerful cultural heritage that Tuscany has exported around the world, including archives, contemporary art, books, cinema, music, theater, publishing, monuments, and even a copy of Garabaldi's passport as you can see in the pictures.

How to get to the Castello di Lusuolo? From Villafranca in Lunigiana, follow the directions for Mulazzo. Once you have crossed the large bridge over the Magra river, turn left following the signs for Lusuolo.

If you go: the museum is open only on weekends and some holidays.
