Kayabuki No Sato is a unique, remote village located in the mountains north of Kyoto. It is known for its traditional thatched-roof farmhouses, which are found throughout the area and still inhabited by local residents. Visitors are invited to explore these homes and get a glimpse into the past, as they wander around the village. At the Kayabuki No Sato Folk Museum, travelers can view displays of ancient tools and household items used in past centuries, as well as learn about the craftsmanship behind constructing and maintaining the thatched roofs. The Little Indigo Museum provides a fascinating experience at a studio and gallery dedicated to dyeing with natural indigo plants. For an even more immersive experience, travelers can stay overnight in one of the farmhouses, providing a chance to appreciate Miyama's rustic atmosphere with modern amenities such as tatami floors, futon beds, and open hearths (irori). Ashiu Forest on the eastern border of Miyama is also a must-see destination, a magnificent old-growth forest populated with deer, bears, and monkeys.
