Iquitos is the gateway to Peru’s northern Amazon and one of the most remote cities in the world — you cannot reach it by road. Access is by plane (typically from Lima) or river only.

This is not a casual add-on. It requires dedicated time in your itinerary.

Most travelers fly from Lima to Iquitos and transfer directly to a river lodge or luxury Amazon cruise rather than spending significant time in the city itself.

How to structure it:

• Plan 3–4 nights minimum for an Amazon experience

• Choose between a land-based jungle lodge or a river cruise

• Expect heat, humidity, and a completely different climate from Cusco

• Pack lightweight clothing, insect repellent, and rain protection

What to know:

The Amazon portion of Peru is at low elevation (sea level), so altitude is not a factor here — but logistics are. Flights are required, and cruise departures run on fixed schedules.

Most travelers visit Iquitos specifically for:

• Luxury Amazon river cruises

• Wildlife spotting (pink river dolphins, sloths, monkeys)

• Guided rainforest excursions

• Cultural visits to river communities

This is an immersive experience — not a city stay.
