The Huka Falls is one of New Zealand's most popular and breathtaking natural attractions, located a short drive from the centre of Taupō in the North Island.

The falls are fed by New Zealand's longest river, the Waikato River, which transforms from calm and wide to a raging force of nature as it squeezes through a narrow volcanic rock gorge. The water accelerates into a stunning shade of frothy turquoise before thundering 11 metres into a bubbling, misty pool below.

To put it into perspective, over 220,000 litres of water per second crash through this narrow channel—it’s loud, powerful, and pretty unforgettable. You’ll hear it before you see it; once you do, it’s hard to look away!

To see the Huka Falls, park your car at the visitor's centre and walk just 5 minutes to the first viewing platform. It can get busy here, particularly in the peak season. But there are plenty of easy-access viewing platforms and walkways where you can take in the falls from different angles.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a jet boat or river cruise for a front-row seat at the base of the falls. But PLEASE don't think about attempting to swim near the Huka Falls. They are incredibly dangerous and can be fatal.
