After exploring dozens of Finnish municipalities on our 309 adventure, we've realized that some things are true no matter where you go. Here are five personal insights that have made all the difference in how we travel – and might just change how you explore too:

1. Slow down — the best stories take time to find.

Every place has its charm, but you won’t find it rushing through. Sit in a café. Watch the lake. Talk to the shopkeeper. The more time you give a place, the more it gives back.

2. The locals are the best guides.

You won’t find the most beautiful trail, hidden swimming spot, or quirky roadside attraction in a brochure — but the person working at the gas station might tell you all about it if you just ask.

3. Nature is never far — and it’s always worth the detour.

Whether it’s a short forest path or a climb to a lookout tower, nature always delivers. Listen to the birds, smell the pine, and bring dry socks — you’ll probably need them!

4. Kids don’t need much — just space to play and explore.

A swing set, a rock to climb, or a stream to splash in turns any destination into an adventure. Some of their favorite memories were made in the smallest, quietest places.

5. It’s not about the checklist — it’s about the moments.

We started this as a goal, but it’s become a way of life. Each place holds a moment — a laugh, a view, a pause — and together they’ve built a story we never expected.

Wherever your journey takes you, go with open eyes, time to spare, and a willingness to be surprised. EVEN when Finnish people are shy to speak English they truly love when you start conversation with them <3.
