They are known to represent esteemed members of the Bersaglieri battalion, which were a troop of marksmen in the Italian Army’s infantry corps and acted as a symbol of the quest to unite Italy (known as the Risorgimento) in the 19th century. It was known for Milanese high-ranking families to show their support for unity by showcasing symbols and emblems like this on their homes.
